seo and web standards

3.19.2004

I prepared a few materials for my co-workers about a week ago, in the interest of helping everyone get up to speed on the benefits of coding to web standards, especially as they apply to search engine optimization. And since I'm starting to get some indication that I have at least a few readers who are interested in that kind of stuff, I'm offering the goods here, such as they are.

They are:

The HTML and CSS files have plenty of comments explaning the reasoning behind the code. These are informal and somewhat hastily prepared — kind of like a crib sheet you'd give to a pal. They're for educational purposes only — I don't want to see any Maddenmedia clone sites cropping up on the Web. But y'all wouldn't do that to me, right? Didn't think so.

If you're a regular reader of any of the sites in my "reading" sidebar, all this stuff will be old hat to you. I'm not claiming to be an expert or an innovator — just a designer trying to keep up with the times. That's difficult enough.

sugarbush tears up club congress

My friends in Sugarbush put on a rockin' good show at Club Congress last night. If you live in Tucson and you haven't heard of Sugarbush yet, why haven't you? This is one great Tucson band. They just keep getting better with each show, and if you love to dance, you want to be at this band's shows.

'Nuff said.

of things to come

3.9.2004

Spring has arrived in full force today, it seems. I felt it the minute I stepped into the sun this morning, and most perversely, I felt my spirits sink. I guess I'm not ready for spring. After all, this winter has been lovely and mild, whereas spring in Tucson is more like pre-summer — a portent of 100+ degree temperatures soon to come. I'm all for winter sticking around a while longer.

Another thing depressing me today is that I learned one of my favorite co-workers is leaving our company for a new job. I feel as though all of the people who make working fun have left or are leaving. That's not strictly true — there are still fun people around. But the attrition that we've experienced in the latter months is a depressing trend. It's stirring up my inherent restlessness — for the past ten years I've never held a job or lived in the same home for more than two years. I'm coming up on the two-year mark at MM now. And while I feel a desire for stability and familiarity, I also feel a simultaneous and contrary desire for change and freedom. But whether I stay or go, I want to always be driven by the desire for improvement - to not settle for “good enough” when I could achieve “better”.

moved

3.3.2004

Two weeks and ten bruises later (or thereabouts) we are finally moved into our new apartment. And very glad to be there am I.

Perhaps I will post a photo of our new digs after I unearth my camera.

I'm doing an interesting little extracurricular (read: for free) project right now. More details to come.
